National Parks
Rwenzori Mountains National Park is located in southwestern Uganda, along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It spans approximately 996 square kilometers, covering parts of the Kabarole, Kasese, and Bundibugyo districts. The park encompasses the central and eastern sections of the Rwenzori mountain range, often referred to as the "Mountains of the Moon," stretching about 120 km in length and 48 km in width.
Established in 1991 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, the park is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and stunning landscapes. It is home to Mount Stanley's Margherita Peak, which, at 5,109 meters, is Africa's third-highest peak. The Rwenzori Mountains are distinguished by their unique vegetation zones, ranging from montane forests to alpine meadows, fostering a rich array of plant and animal life.
The park's diverse habitats support numerous species, including endemic birds, butterflies, and primates. Notable wildlife includes forest elephants, chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and the Rwenzori turaco. Visitors can explore various trekking and climbing routes, experiencing glaciers, waterfalls, and unique flora along the way. The nearby town of Kasese serves as the main gateway, offering accommodations and access to the park's trailheads.
