National Parks
Lake Mburo National Park is located in western Uganda, approximately 240 kilometers from the capital city, Kampala. It is situated along the Kampala-Mbarara highway, making it one of the most accessible national parks in Uganda. The park spans parts of Kiruhura, Mbarara, and Isingiro districts, covering an area of about 260 square kilometers. Its strategic location near major towns makes it a convenient stop for travelers heading to other national parks like Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
Lake Mburo National Park is known for its diverse ecosystem, featuring rolling savannahs, acacia woodlands, and wetlands. It is home to a variety of wildlife, including zebras, impalas, elands, hippos, and over 350 bird species. Unlike other national parks in Uganda, Lake Mburo does not have elephants, which allows the vegetation to thrive, creating a lush landscape. The park is centered around Lake Mburo, which provides a crucial water source for animals and supports aquatic life, including crocodiles and fish.
Visitors to Lake Mburo National Park can engage in activities such as game drives, boat safaris, bird watching, and guided nature walks. The park is also one of the few places in Uganda where tourists can experience horseback safaris, offering a unique way to explore the wildlife up close. Community visits to the surrounding Bahima cattle-keeping communities provide cultural insights into the traditional way of life. With its scenic beauty, rich wildlife, and accessibility, Lake Mburo National Park is an excellent destination for both short and extended wildlife experiences.
