National Parks
Mount Elgon National Park is located in eastern Uganda, along the border with Kenya. It covers an area of approximately 1,279 square kilometers in Uganda and extends into Kenya, where it is managed as a transboundary conservation area. The park is situated near the towns of Mbale and Kapchorwa, making it accessible for visitors traveling from Kampala, the capital of Uganda. The highest peak of Mount Elgon, Wagagai, stands at 4,321 meters above sea level, making it one of the most significant volcanic mountains in East Africa.
Mount Elgon National Park is known for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and rich biodiversity. The park is home to dense montane forests, bamboo zones, and high-altitude moorlands that support various wildlife species, including elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, and over 300 bird species. One of the park's most remarkable features is the vast caldera, measuring about 40 kilometers in diameter, which is one of the largest in the world. Visitors can also explore unique attractions such as the Sipi Falls, ancient caves, and hot springs, which add to the park’s natural beauty.
Tourism in Mount Elgon National Park offers a range of activities for adventure seekers and nature lovers. Hiking and trekking are the most popular activities, with several trails leading to the Wagagai summit and other scenic points. The Sipi Falls, located on the slopes of Mount Elgon, provide an excellent location for sightseeing, abseiling, and photography. Cultural encounters with the local Bagisu and Sabiny communities offer visitors a chance to learn about traditional practices such as the famous Imbalu (circumcision) ceremony. With its serene environment and less crowded trails compared to other mountain parks in East Africa, Mount Elgon National Park provides a perfect escape for nature lovers seeking adventure and relaxation.
