Semuliki National Park

Semuliki National Park, established in October 1993, is located in Bwamba County within Uganda's Bundibugyo District. It lies on the western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, bordered by the Rwenzori Mountains to the southeast and Lake Albert to the north. The park encompasses 219 square kilometers of East Africa's only lowland tropical rainforest, a remnant of the ancient Ituri Forest of the Congo Basin.

This unique location places Semuliki at the intersection of several ecological zones, resulting in a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The park is home to over 400 bird species, including the lyre-tailed honey guide, and 60 mammal species such as African buffalo, leopard, and hippopotamus. Notably, it harbors eight primate species and nearly 460 butterfly species, underscoring its status as one of Africa's biodiversity hotspots.

Visitors to Semuliki can engage in various activities, including birdwatching, hiking along trails like the Kirumia Trail, and visiting the Sempaya hot springs, where the water's heat is sufficient to cook eggs and plantains. The park also offers cultural experiences, allowing tourists to learn about the indigenous Basua people's traditions and crafts, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
